This may seem like a great idea but I am troubled by what this tells other teens.
You may have the right to do it but is it in everyones interest to do it.
You are teaching kids to not take responsibiity. Are you trying to tell me that your teen never was speeding, even five minutes before or after he got the ticket?
to make matters worse your a cop questioning a cops judgement. what kind of message is this sending.
All our kids have gotten tickets. pay up and forget it. even if the cop was wrong consider it a credit for the 50 tickets you didnt get because the cops were not around.
All this “take it to court” is a waste of taxpayers money and isnt going to do much real good.
I am a retired deputy sheriff and I dont agree with what you are doing here. Many other cops I have talked to think you are wrong but wont say so.
Joe, on the contrary, I think this is completely teaching kids to not only take responsibility, but to demand responsibility from those around them and create a culture of accountability. The civil libertarian in me cringes, but a lot of kids feel that the police are the enemy. Heck, a lot of adults do too. This keeps the police and the kids accountable, shows that responsibility works both ways, and that people who play fast and loose don’t get off.
If the cops think the kids are wrong for demanding accountability from law enforcement, if the cops are willing to play the “well, they must be guilty of something” (which you seem so open to doing) then the cops are wrong, corrupt, and at the very least should be fired. If we can catch them at this sort of perversion of justice, then they should probably also be incarcerated as well.
Because that sort of attitude makes a mockery of justice, and encourages an “us vs them” attitude between law enforcement officers and citizens, and that sort of crap only serves the criminals, on both sides of the badge.
Before I got down to your last sentence I knew you were a police officer. As soon as you said “you’re a cop questioning a cops judgement. what kind of message is this sending.” could only be from a cop! Sadly, cops make errors in judgement all to often but get away with it, the more you question judgement the better a cop becomes – but that’s a different subject.
On the main subject – to your response of “All this “take it to court” is a waste of taxpayers money and isnt going to do much real good.” – cost or not, that is what the courts are for!
By suggesting that the Rude’s not support the son with the evidence they have because it’s not teaching “kids to take responsibility” is crap and you are making the assumptions that he is guilty is crazy and frankly, a typical cop attitude. Your saying that if you son come home after getting a ticket animatedly telling you he was not speeding and then technology supports his calm that your response would be “the cops are always right son – your grounded” – what principle are you teaching?
